The massive energy demands and solid waste generation of urban households tend to disturb the balance of sustainability. In the era of circular economy, recovering energy from waste has been considered as a viable option to address this catch-22. Further, World Energy Council’s measurable parameters like, security, access, equity sets the goals for the nations to attain energy sustainability at global level. This empirical research aims at critically evaluating the implementation of waste management mechanism and functionality of the waste to energy infrastructure in Pune City, India. On basis of this case study, the research further promotes the capacity building approach for energy recovery from waste and decentralized systems approach for household solid waste management and emphasizes need for relevant policy and legal framework by the local governments.
